Managing asbestos safely

In Australia, the use of asbestos as a building material was commonplace until the late 1980s. In the electricity industry it had a variety of uses, such as insulation for electrical wiring, in fire doors as well as in underground pit covers, electrical backing boards, cement sheeting and tiles.

Ausgrid has been working for more than 15 years identifying the exact areas where asbestos is present around its electricity network and to safely removing it. An asbestos register details the status of known asbestos in all forms throughout Ausgrid’s electricity network and other Ausgrid properties.

Ausgrid manages the risk posed by asbestos in its workplace via an Asbestos Safety Management Plan, the Ausgrid asbestos register and its documented safe work processes.

If you are a contractor working on Ausgrid’s assets, you can request a copy of the asbestos register for the site by contacting the Project Manager for the job or alternately you can email hazmat@ausgrid.com.au with the site location and project manager’s details.
