Over the past few years, Ausgrid has been progressively transferring electrical load away from Dalley Street Zone Substation located in Dalley Street, Sydney CBD. Dalley Street Substation was first commissioned in the late 60’s and the majority of its assets are in aged and deteriorating condition. This work is part of Ausgrid’s plans to maintain a safe and reliable electricity supply in Sydney’s CBD.
The final stage of this work is to install new 11,000-volt cables along Sussex Street, Hickson Road, Kent Street and Argyle Street. This work will maintain supply to the new Circular Quay and Barangaroo area developments.
Located in the northern part of Sydney CBD, Dalley Street Zone Substation currently supplies 4,924 customers with a mix of residential and commercial properties. The project will transfer 39MVA load from this zone substation to Belmore Park Zone Substation.
Ausgrid has engaged JDG Civil to carry out the work on behalf of Ausgrid.
Investigation work and detailed design is almost complete with construction work planned to start in early 2024.
Following notifications issued earlier in the year, most of the investigation work is now complete. These investigations have allowed us to finalise our design and engage a contractor to complete the installation of the conduits and 11,000V cables required for the project.
JDG Civil will be doing the work on behalf of Ausgrid. Work is expected to start in early January 2025 and should take about a year to complete, weather and ground conditions permitting.
The work will involve excavating a trench about a metre wide in the roadway in Hickson Road, Sussex, Kent and Argyle Streets and laying conduits (plastic pipes) to house the new cables.
The cables will then be installed in late 2025.
In November 2024, we notified residents about site investigation work to locate underground services and confirming their position along Kent and Argyle Streets. We will excavate a slit trench in the road and then restore it with bitumen, until construction starts early next year.
We will work on Monday to Friday between 7am and 7pm, and on Saturdays between 7am and 5pm, weather permitting.
This work is expected to take one week to complete, weather permitting.
